The Fast and the Furious: Pink Slip 3D

The Fast and the Furious franchise, with 13 million copies sold, has unveiled its lasted model in The Fast and the Furious: Pink Slip 3D (also known as The Fast and the Furious Streets). I-Play has engaged Firemint to develop this edition and they have come up with the best looking Fast and Furious game to date.

Pink Slip does a good job of capturing the underground street racing scene as most of these races take place at night or in the early morning hours on the streets of Los Angeles, Miami and Tokyo. There are two modes of play, quick race and arcade or career where you bet your pink slip against other racers and unlock cars, tracks and four different types of races (street racing, drag racing, drifting and cop chase).   Pretty simple. Unfortunately, unlike The Fast and the Furious: Fugitive, there is no story to propel you through the game. Pink Slip is a stripped down racer that concentrates on racing.

First off, the speed and control are excellent on my N73. With the standard auto-acceleration and renewable nitro on the 5 key you can easily control your car with one hand while focusing on out-turning or bumping off your rivals. This is accomplished without a hint of lag. There are 32 cars to unlock from tuners, imports and sports to performance, exotics and muscle cars all with different attributes and handling. Seeing that there are only 16 total races in the game with increasing difficulty you will have to run some races multiple times to unlock all the cars.

While there isn’t a butt load of tracks and some simply have new pathways, what is available keeps your interest. You’ll race through tunnels, down underpasses, take off ramps and on ramps and drift up winding mountain roads. What is very nice is the inclusion of the rise and fall of the road on overpasses where you can get some sweet jumps. Unfortunately, there is no slow motion as in Fugitive.

There is a little cut scene before and after each race which ties it together but regrettably there is no sound other than looping music. Sound FX can lift a game to another level but so many mobile games play like a silent movie. There is also no tuning or customizing whatsoever (sorry gear heads).

The difficulty in Pink Slip can be described as non-frustrating as long as you pick the right car. Drifting can be the most difficult as you need hit a target drifting score as well as win the race but there is a way to make it easier (hint: win the race, win the car). I generally don’t like drifting races but I found these easy to drift and enjoyable. The drag races were fun but probably too easy as all you need to do is time your shifts to the green line on your tachometer and watch the cut scene.

The Fast and the Furious: Pink Slip 3D has a lot going for it, nice graphics, good control and speed, a good variety of races on interesting tracks and a ton of cars. With just a little more horsepower in terms of sound, more tracks and career depth this title could have been over the top. As it is it is a good arcade racer for your mobile device and gets 4 stars.
