Snowboard Hero

If you want to step out onto the slippery slops of mobile snowboarding you’d better bring a bag of tricks and your “A” game because the king of this mountain is the much feared and highly regarded Massive Snowboarding from Gameloft. Fishlabs Studios, never one to back off from a challenge, has brought Snowboard Hero to the starting gate and the race is on.

As the horn sounds, Massive takes the early lead with its ability to choose from multiple characters and boards while Hero is confined to one rider. As the race opens up one is struck by the speed of the newcomer as he cuts into Massive’s early lead to show this will be no easy walkover for the champ. Looking about, one can’t help notice the nice clean winter graphics in Hero. Although there is no falling snow as in Massive, that only goes to give a sharper more focused look to Hero’s visuals putting him well clear of the king heading into their initial turns and tricks.

While on the snow, both competitors use the d-pad for turning left and right. To jump in Hero you simply press the center key while in Massive pressing the center key puts you in a crouch for more speed then releasing the center key gives you air. This addition of speed lets Massive cut into the challengers lead. But our Hero has an answer. As he performs tricks he fills up a turbo bar that can be used to provide a boost to keep him comfortably in front.

But the champ has just begun to display his style and vast array of tricks. In Massive when riders turn they lean a lot more onto their edges than in Hero giving them a lot of style points and ‘feel’. Hero’s rider remains more upright. In fact, at times it looks as though his board is flat on the snow and he is simply twisting to make his turn.

When it comes to tricks, Snowboard Hero performs grabs by pushing left or right on the d-pad and frontflips and backflips by pushing up and down.    In Massive the left and right d-pad starts you spinning in the air where you can actually perform a 1080 degree frontside while you grab the board by pressing 5. This gives Massive a larger repertoire of tricks than Hero. You also have the ability to control your landing in Massive Snowboarding while in Snowboard Hero the landings are automatic. This all goes to give Massive a large edge in style and handling allowing him to pull even with his challenger as they head for the last section of the race.

The different types of races offered by each game is a push as is the difficulty level . They each give you rival races, speed runs and freestyle runs that demand complete concentration. Hero adds a gate race (passing thru gates gives you a time bonus) while Massive adds a video shoot. Hero lets you race down 6 different runs with shortcuts on each while Massive gives you 8 runs. One advantage in Massive is that you are given points to add to your stats as you complete goals. This skill upgrading lets Massive nose into the lead as they eye the finish line.

There is a large difference in the types of runs offered by these rivals. In Snowboard Hero the runs are all narrow and winding, a characteristic of most Fishlabs racing games. In Massive the runs are all wide open bowls with multiple ramps and rails to choose from. Because of the this, Massive’s races never seem like replays of your last effort. Snowboard Hero is a more linear game. Each challenge must be unlocked before you move on to the next meaning that unless you are extremely skilled you end up rerunning the same race multiple times. Given the narrow trails, it becomes a matter of grind this rail, move to the right, take that jump, hit that gate over and over until you get it right.

As they cross the finish line, it is the grizzled veterans ability to give the player an unlimited amount of choices and options in how they want to run each race that gives it the winning edge. Snowboard Hero pushes Massive harder than its ever been pushed before and gets 4 stars as a fun, absorbing, good looking mobile game. Just as Mohammed Ali needed Joe Frasier and Magic Johnson needed Larry Bird, Massive Snowboarding needs Snowboard Hero.
