Unlike Pink Slip, both the Iphone and Java versions of FF3D offer story modes that let you play out scenes from the movie beginning with the gas tanker pursuit. Of course, the Iphone version is more highly-polished, detailed and vibrant but the Java version is not bad looking, somewhat similar to Pink Slip, and runs at a playable, although not silky smooth, frame rate. Both versions offer over 30 cars across four locations with a large variety of races from pursuits to road races, drags, drifts and tunnel racing but unfortunately no customization. The tunnel racing involves hitting the number keys in Java or tapping the green light on your Iphone to choose the correct path.
The Iphone version has great state-of-the-art handling with its accelerometer that feels more controllable than Fastlane Street Racing, although there is no option to calibrate which would be helpful in the drifting. The Java driver is left to wrestle with the manual steering of the d-pad. Another advantage of the Iphone version is the inclusion of multiple camera views from low to higher to a nice front bumper view that is helpful in the tunnel drags where you need to see the upcoming branches as soon as possible. In the Java version you are limited to 2 opponents while the Iphone model lets you go up against 3 racers, and of course, the landscape view makes a huge difference. Both versions contain tons of nice cut scenes.
Possibly the greatest area of omission in the Java version of FF3D is it’s total lack of sound other than the music while the Iphone’s version contains nice revving engines, screeching tires and crash sounds to add to the excitement. Like Pink Slip, both new models of FF involve races which put your pink slip on the line. In order to avoid the frustration of losing your cherished ride you need to keep an eye on the race meter and hit restart if things start to look hopeless. This can be a frequent occurrence as the difficulty in FF3D feels a little higher than in Pink Slip and the racers seem to team up against you.
