One thing that is certain is that sooner or later, all truly great ideas get copied. This is especially true in the world of mobile gaming where new platforms are emerging faster than new ideas. There have been a number of classic ideas that have inspired remakes for the newest mobile platforms and give remarkably good approximations of some of the best ideas in video gaming.
UFO Aftershock - Java:

If you were gaming on the PC in 1993 you’ll know that a little known turn-based strategy game took the PC world by storm not with fancy graphics or cool animation but with great squad-based tactical game play. That game was Xcom - UFO Defense which went on to become the consensus game of the year. UFO Aftershock takes it’s inspiration from that classic focusing on the turn-based battleground aspect and provides hours of tactical game play. Your squad members gain experience/accuracy points and can even use psionic powers to take over aliens. Don’t leave any team members alone as, like the original, you become attached to your most experienced fighters.
Vector Tanks - Iphone:

Back in the day when the only way to play video games was to go to the arcade and feed endless quarters into humungous machines, Battlezone by Atari captivated me for good while. Now for a few dollars you can play any time you want on your Iphone with Chillingo’s Vector Tanks, a nice remake of that classic arcade game with great polygon particle effects, retro vector graphics and nice sound that makes you feel like you‘re looking thru the viewing periscope of the original. The controls are like the arcade game with virtual joysticks on the left and right that control the treads of your tank and may take some practice. The arcade game inspired the great PC game Battlezone.
Rise of Lost Empires - Iphone:

Real time strategy a la Warcraft is an underrepresented category on the Iphone if you discount tower defense games. Gameloft’s Rise of Lost Empires is one of the better one’s in this category with bright nicely detailed worlds and good sized characters who speak when selected as you build your cities and train your armies to follow a nice selection of heroes into some lengthy battles against the evil Orcs. Although there are some control issues with characters occasionally gallivanting off on their own and some slight touch difficulties, the Iphone’s touch screen seems well-suited for this type of game and I expect to see more like it in the future.
Underworlds - Iphone:

If you’re after a little Diablo-like hack and slash RPG on the Iphone then check out Underworlds by Pixel Mine. All the elements of character building, treasure hunting, trading and sword play are present in this absorbing dungeon crawler and updates have addressed player concerns with character control, sound and touch controls. Random loot drops change every time you play giving you new and unique items and a second chapter is reportedly in the works. Underworlds mines the same rich and addictive gaming vein that Diablo so thoroughly uncovered.
Brick Breaker Revolution 3D - Iphone:

Brick Breaker Revolution 3D takes the basic breakout idea, places it on a 3D playing field, adds multiple power ups from lasers to rockets and nukes, big balls, multiple balls and magnets, gives you seemingly endless levels and allows you to open gates to upper levels while keeping everything remarkably simple and totally addicting. This is a great 3D arcade winner with a wicked hook that will keep you going for days.
