Pocket Legends by Spacetime Studios is a terrifically fun 3D MMORPG that’s a first of its kind for the Idevice and deserves to be tried by anyone remotely interested in a 3D mobile online multiplayer action/RPG.  It costs you nothing for some incredibly robust content that lets you build three different character types up 13 levels before being tempted by the DLC.  At which point, you’ll happily throw down $1.99 to continue the party.

 

You get to choose from 3 character types, a warrior, an archer or an enchantress.  You pick up attribute points as you level which you can distribute any way you like but a warrior will generally focus on strength, an archer on dexterity and an enchantress on intelligence.  Each class will also pick up 12 special skills that give each class different playing styles and powers.

Partying with other players around the world or with friends is where the real fun is in Pocket Legends.  As your animal party advances through more and more powerful enemies the drops are randomly distributed and the loot evenly split.  The bear warriors are usually the tanks that fight up close while the bird archers deal damage from afar and the enchantress has healing and buffing abilities besides some powerful casting attacks.  The attack button is in the right corner with your special skills stacked on top while the movement button is in the left corner.  Swiping moves the camera and pinching zooms in or out.  You also have the ability to make your character emote (wave, jump or celebrate) and also send messages to your party.  It handles effortlessly in the heat of battle.

  

With a party of 4-5 the feathers and fur will be flying with everyone casting magic attacks, stomping and slashing away with some spectacular effects and battle sounds.  Yet  the speed, especially while playing through a Wifi connection, remains remarkably solid.  While playing over your phones connection the speed is more erratic depending on your device and connection, yet it’s still playable.  It’s easy to join a long list of ongoing games or start one of your own

Each new dungeon DLC allows you to level up with new bosses and tougher foes not to mention more powerful weapon drops and armor.  It’s a little disappointing that the different dungeons don’t have more background variety, although the last update provides a snowy landscape to battle through.  You can also spend real money on special weapons, armor or a re-roll of your stats if you choose.  Reportedly, Spacetime is working on an upcoming trading system.

  

Spacetime Studios is constantly monitoring, updating and improving the play balance of this addictive and immersive 3D MMO.  It’s the best of it’s kind for the Iphone and currently gets 4 ½ stars, just keep an eye on how much you spend as, like crack, it’s easy to fall under Pocket Legend's spell.  I've easily sunk $10 into PL which is a small price to pay for such a great mobile MMO experience.
