I have a weakness for underwater 3D games. Perhaps it’s a desire to be submerged in a foreign world or an urge to return to the womb. Mission: Deep Sea by Hiccup Studios and Chillingo is the latest undersea adventure to wet my appetite and it creates a convincing underwater world for you to explore on your Iphone.
I’m not sure if hang gliding is as laid back and relaxing as Glyder by Glu would seem to suggest. After all, your life is on the line. Yet everything in this casual flying game is focused on creating a dreamy almost mystical quality where the only real danger is that some gamers may find themselves falling into a deep slumber.
If they do nod off they will miss out on a beautifully well-crafted game with a smooth accelerometer controlled flight engine that allows you to easily glide your protagonist Eryn over and through six ethereal islands picking up crystals in order to free herself from a “dimensional rift”. While most games are aimed at the 10-35 year-old male, Glyder takes a different approach as there are no fire-breathing dragons or flesh eating zombies to dispatch of and Eryn is not your usual supremely-endowed butt kicker. In fact, there is no dying in Glyder at all. If you crash you’re simply transported back to the last platform you were at without penalty. It’s low-pressure gaming.
The Iphone and Ipod touch with their accelerometers have a remarkable ability to impart near organic control to games. Nanosaur 2 by Pangea Software is a prime example of how tilt control can add a dimension that even consoles can’t match.
The flight engine in Nanosaur 2 is as natural and transparent as it gets. A simple tilt of your screen has you turning, swooping and diving with ease until you’ll feel as if you’ve been reincarnated as a large-winged Pterodactyl. There’s an exhilarating feeling of flight to Nano 2 as you can feel yourself being aerodynamically lifted upon the wind by your expansive wingspan. Once you get use to the handling and turning radius of your prehistoric bird of prey you’re free to explore a fantastic open-ended primordial world.
