Gameloft never tries to reinvent the wheel. What they do, and they do it very well, is to bring inspired clones or ports of successful games from other platforms onto the Idevice. In N.O.V.A. they deliver a striking Halo inspired FPS that should appeal to that large fan base.

Call of Duty World at War - Zombies by Activision and Treyarch packs more intensity, gore, tension and body parts into one level than I’d ever thought I’d see on a mobile phone. COD Zombies traps you in a thoroughly convincing 2-story Nazi bunker called Nacht der Untoten lifted directly from the zombie mode of the console blockbuster Call of Duty - World at War and lets you have at it with an onslaught of zombies on your handheld whenever and wherever the mood strikes.

The Gameloft juggernaut has rocked the Iphone with the release of two genre-busting bombs within the span of two weeks. First with the open-world of Gangster and now with the FPS Modern Combat Sandstorm they’ve forever changed the landscape of 3D gaming on the Iphone.
While we all knew it was coming, the wait for the first next-gen FPS for the Iphone has been a long one. Whether or not Modern Combat is the holy grail is debatable and unresolved until Gameloft releases the promised multiplayer but they’ve certainly cleared the way with an explosive air strike of graphics, control, sound and action that will stand as a landmark in Iphone gaming.

MachineWorks Northwest has done it’s best to try and bring Duke Nukem 3D to the Iphone but they’ve come perilously close to squeezing all the joy out of gaming’s favorite bad boy by shackling him with controls that nearly push him into the abyss. Yet, if you stick with our hero he’ll show you his grit by overcoming perhaps his toughest foe yet to give Iphone gamers their first noteworthy FPS.

Capcom has taken one of the best survival/horror games of all-time and reshaped it to fit the Iphone in Resident Evil 4 Mobile edition. Hitting many of the highlights of the console blockbuster, Capcom has created a mobile synopsis that while it naturally suffers in comparison, if taken on it’s own, provides as much chills and thrills as anything found in the app store.

Doom lover’s may well recoil in utter horror and disgust at the mere mention of their landmark classic being placed “on rails”. This seems to go against all that is holy and good in the gaming universe. Yet Doom Resurrection by Id is a product of the genius that is John Carmack and as such we all need to bow our head and pay him the respect that is due the Godfather of the first person shooter.

If you ever play or simply witness Quake 2 running at full particle-sparking glory on a Nokia N95 you’ll be blown away by the capabilities residing in today’s modern cell phones. The powerful Iphone would seem ready to deliver some high-quality first person shooters to our pockets after demonstrating it’s chops on recently released 3 rd person standouts like Terminator Salvation and Resident Evil. Now arriving on the mobile killing fields is Prey Invasion for the Iphone by the storied 3D Realms.

After 3 years in the making, Fishlabs Studios has delivered a gorgeous galaxy of gaming goodness to the palm of our hands in Galaxy on Fire 2. It’s a hardcore gamer’s game that harkens back to the classic space sim Privateer for the PC and gives us perhaps the deepest mobile game ever offered.
The graphics have a definite WOW factor even on a small screen. The clarity and detail of the space stations, planets, ships and distant galaxies are light years beyond GoF 1 in conveying the beauty of space. This is accomplished without the slightest drop in frame rate even in the fiercest of battles amongst dozens of spacecraft and floating space stuff. The fireworks are stunning.

No gaming genre can grab you by the throat, consume you and put a stranglehold on your time like a well-made 3D shooter. Sadly, this is the least populated of all the mobile genres. Onto this barren landscape steps Resident Evil Degeneration for the N-gage 2.0 by Capcom Mobile. Capcom could of tossed out a quick, uninspired mobile knock out and still of made money. Instead, they’ve seen fit to deliver a riveting, full-featured 3rd person nail-biter that more than lives up to the Resident Evil legacy.
